"I think I'm in Avengers 3 and 4, but I'm not in Civil War."
So, we won't see Nick Fury until Avengers: Infinity War Part I, which hits theaters summer 2018. This means he won't be stopping by to recruit the Sorcerer Supreme in this November's Doctor Strange. Nor will he show up in the 2017 releases Thor: Ragnarok or Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. So, what will Nick Fury have been doing all of this time leading up to his big return in Infinity War? We don't know, and it doesn't sound like Sam Jackson knows either. When asked if he's on Team Captain America or Team Iron Man, the iconic actor states the following.
"Ahhhh, I don't know. I haven't given it much thought. I'm Nick Fury -- Nick Fury is above all that."
Nick Fury has never gotten his own standalone movie. He is more like the physical glue that keeps the entire MCU together. And he was last seen lingering around the shadows of Avengers: Age of Ultron, showing up at Hawkeye's quaint country farmhouse out of the blue. He fits into practically any Marvel movie, but Samuel L. Jackson, like the other Marvel actors, is under a contract, and that contract is running out. Until he resigns, Marvel will wisely use him sparingly, where needed.
It is not yet know what kind of role Sam Jackson will have in Marvel Phase 3, which begins with Civil War. Some believed he'd be showing up in Thor 3 simply because he wrapped filming on Kong: Skull Island in Australia just as that Marvel sequel began shooting in the country. But it clearly makes no sense for him to show up in outer space, with almost none of Ragnarok taking place on planet earth. While we'll likely have to wait for Nick Fury to return in 2018's Infinity War, its always possible that he could pop up in a Marvel post-credit scene before then. Fingers crossed.
