Guillermo Del Toro's Next Movie Is a Mysterious Cold War Romance

Last month, we reported that Guillermo del Toro has passed the directorial reins on Pacific Rim 2 to Daredevil showrunner Steven S. DeKnight. Today we have word that Guillermo del Toro has moved on to his next project, with Deadline reporting that the filmmaker has castSally Hawkins in an Untitled Cold War Drama, with Octavia Spencer in talks for another role. No details were given for either of their characters quite yet.

The story is a period piece set in 1963 America, described as a "mysterious and magical other-worldly love story." It's worth noting that the John F. Kennedyassassination happened in 1963, but it isn't known if that pivotal event in American history will tie into the story. The assassination is currently the focal point of Hulu's 11.22.63, the exact date the U.S. President was killed in Dallas, Texas.
Guillermo del Toro will also produce with J. Miles Dale (Shadowhunters), although it isn't known when production will begin. This report also doesn't specify who wrote the script, but it seems likely that Guillermo del Toro at least co-wrote the script with another writer, or tackled the screenplay on his own. Since we don't have a production schedule quite yet, it isn't known where this project sits on the filmmaker's development slate, which is quite extensive.
Back in January, we reported that the filmmaker was attached to three different projects, two movies and one TV series. The TV project isNetflix's Trollhunters, which will introduce a new, fantastical world wrapped around two best friends who make a startling discovery beneath their hometown. The filmmaker is also being eyed to develop and direct the long-gestating Fantastic Voyage for 20th Century Fox andScary Stories to Tell in the Dark for CBS Films, but it isn't known which of these projects will move forward first.
Sally Hawkins most recently starred in Warner Bros.' Godzilla, The Weinstein Company's Paddington and Samuel Goldwyn Films' A Brilliant Young MindOctavia Spencer lent her voice to the current box office champ Zootopia, and she also stars in The Divergent Series: Allegiant, which opens this weekend. We'll be sure to keep you posted with more updates regarding Guillermo del Toro's Untitled Cold War Drama.
