Last night's 88th Annual Academy Awards gave fans a slew of memorable moments, but one in particular broke a social media record.Twitter announced today that Leonardo DiCaprio's Best Actor Oscar winfor The Revenant generated more than 440,000 Tweets per minute, the most-Tweeted minute of any Oscars telecast ever. This beat out the previous record of 255,000 Tweets per minute, set when Oscar hostEllen DeGeneres tweeted out a star studded selfie back in 2014.
Ellen DeGeneres' selfie still holds the Twitter record for retweets of a single Oscar post, with over 3.3 million retweets. The other biggest moments of the night wereSpotlight's Best Picture win at the end of the telecast, and Mad Max: Fury Road's sixth Oscar win for Best Sound Mixing. At that point in the show, Mad Max Fury Road had won six of the seven awards it was nominated for, although it didn't win another the rest of the night. It ended up losing Best Picture to Spotlight, Best Director to The Revenant's Alejandro González Iñárritu and Best Visual Effects to the Ex Machina team.
Leonardo DiCaprio was previously nominated for What's Eating Gilbert Grape, The Aviator, Blood Diamond and The Wolf of Wall Street. Perhaps one of his most infamous Oscar moments was when he wasn't even nominated for the record-breaking blockbuster Titanic, which went on to win 11 Oscars including Best Picture. The actor didn't even show up to the Oscar ceremony in 1998, which lead some to theorize that the Academy was collectively upset that he didn't put in an appearance. Regardless of what lead to his Oscar drought, Leo finally has his first Oscar.
The Revenant was a notoriously difficult film to make, with the actor speaking out on many occasions that it was his most difficult project ever. The film went over schedule when they were forced to shut down production since the unseasonably mild Canadian winter didn't yield enough snow needed for the movie. Inspired by true events, The Revenant is an immersive and visceral cinematic experience capturing one man's epic adventure of survival and the extraordinary power of the human spirit.
